Quantum theory of diffusion : temperature dependence of diffusion of light interstitials in Debye solids

چکیده

The temperature dependence of the motion of light interstitials is calculated using the quantum theory of Flynn and Stoneham. The results are compared with the asymptotic expressions given previously. They show that the high temperature asymptote is accurate over a wider range of temperature than expected, whereas the low temperature form is of very restricted application. Deviations from the asymptote depend both on the temperature and on the ratio of the activation energy to the Debye energy. Results for protons in Ta agree remarkably well with the theory for an activation energy 0.188 eV and for a hopping integral J of 29",, of the Debye energy.

Relation of Vacancy Formation and Migration Energies to the Debye Temperature in Solids

A derivation of the relation between the vacancy formation energy E,, the migration energy E, and the Debye temperature 0c is presented. In the Debye model, the relation between E, and Bc follows directly from the “dynamical” form of diffusion theories. The relation between E, and Bc is obtained for solids obeying a corresponding states law. The Debye temperature appearing in the derived expres...

On the quantum theory of isotope effects in the electromigration and thermomigration of light interstitials

The electromigration and thermomigration of light interstitials, such as hydrogen in metals, have been examined in terms of the quantum theory of diffusion of Flynn and Stoneham. The pronounced isotope effect observed in the effective charge 2 is shown to come from the differences in the self trapping distortions of the various isotopes. The qualitative dependence of Z* on isotope, host lattice...

Solutions of diffusion equation for point defects

An analytical solution of the equation describing diffusion of intrinsic point defects in semiconductor crystals has been obtained for a one-dimensional finite-length domain with the Robin-type boundary conditions. The distributions of point defects for different migration lengths of defects have been calculated. The exact analytical solution was used to verify the approximate numerical solutio...

Extension of the diffusion controlled electron transfer theory for intermittent fluorescence of quantum dots: inclusion of biexcitons and the difference of "on" and "off" time distributions.

The equations for the diffusion controlled electron transfer (DCET) theory of quantum dot blinking are extended to include biexcitons. In contrast to excitons, which undego resonant light to dark transitions, the biexcitons, having a much larger total energy, undergo a Fermi's Golden rule type transfer (many acceptance states). The latter immediately gives rise to an exponential tail for the li...

Wave functions for quantum Monte Carlo calculations in solids: Orbitals from density functional theory with hybrid exchange-correlation functionals

We investigate how the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo energy of solids depends on single-particle orbitals used in Slater-Jastrow wave functions. We demonstrate that the dependence can be significant, in particular in the case of 3d transition-metal compounds, which we adopt as examples. We illustrate how exchangecorrelation functionals with variable exact-exchange component can be exploited ...
